Christine, I don't know what study you are referring to, but I spoke with a principle in a nearby school here who personally did her dissertation on this subject. I was unable to get a copy because I didn't have access to that part of the ERIC database. However, she told me her study showed dramatic evidence that school uniforms reduced violence.

Here are some statistics from the long Beach school district which implemented a voluntary uniform system 4 years ago.

In the first year alone they saw a 43% reduction is suspensions, 54% fewer fights, a 70% reduction in substance abuse, 20% fewer cases of weapons possessions and robbery, and an over 50% reduction in reports of battery against teachers.

First off, I disagree with the notion that parents who want freedom of choice for their children's education need to prove anything. The record of pathetic literacy levels is enough of an argument in and of itself. Having said that, in all the studies I have read there has never been a case of decreased academic performance by students. Only increased. So I ask you again, what are you afraid of? Charter schools and voucher programs should be tried on a vast scale. Let the parents decide whether they want their kids to attend them.

Now, you can blame the parents for the dismal performance of your government schools, or you can look at the root cause, which is a system that treats it's funding source as the real customer and in far too many cases finds the parents an irritant and nuisance to deal with.

Who is the customer of education Christine? The NEA, or Department of Education? Or the the parents, teachers and students? Vouchers, and charter schools would greatly help realign the system toward the true customers.
