From the help files:
Virtual files are a feature that enables many other applications to read your Quotes Plus® database. This allows you to analyze data with the Investor's Reference Library or other favorite applications that read Metastock-compatible data files.
Virtual files contain no real data; instead they provide a Metastock-compatible interface to the database. Although they appear just like "real" Metastock® files to your applications, virtual files require only a fraction of the hard disk space and are much faster to create. If you were to export the entire database to Metastock® -compatible files, you would require well over 600 megabytes of hard disk space. Using the virtual interface, you need only about 2 megabytes.

Defining virtual files

Once you install the Virtual Program, you can define the directories and files you want to create.
A virtual directory consists of a MASTER file and one .DOP file; the .DAT files are created, but contain no data. There are four ways to define virtual files:

You can create virtual files for three pre-defined groups of issues by selecting them from the Virtual Program toolbar. Pre-defined groups are: the Investors Reference Library (IRL) Industry Groups, SIC codes, and Standard & Poors indexes.
You can create virtual files for custom groupings using a drag-and-drop interface.
You can import the structure of existing Metastock® -compatible directories.

You can create virtual files as you scan, using a special function in your scan code.

Once you define the virtual files, will update them automatically each time you update your database.
