Heard a congressman the other day remind all that the alleged annual 75 billion dollar surplus is actually a deficit - masked by the surplus of about $ 104 billion in the Social Security account. This "cooking-of-the budget-books" started with Lyndon Johnson but has been continued by every administration since then. Even worse, it has to be with the concurrence of Congress.

The Social Security account was supposed to be separate from the general budget. It's hypocritical to talk about saving social security while using its assets to pay for the general budget expenses. Matter of fact, the situation is a charade. Don't know why the general press doesn't expose it as such.
