G7 statement "bit empty", Soros says
WASHINGTON, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Billionaire financier and philanthropist George Soros said on Sunday a statement by the Group of Seven major industrial nations had little content.

Asked whether the statement issued on Saturday went far enough, Soros told reporters: ''It sounded a little bit empty.''

He declined further comment as he came to the headquarters of the International Monetary Fund.

Soros has called for major industrial powers to cooperate more closely in trying to solve the world's financial crisis.

Gotta Save da Pineapples....Philippines expects $261 mln from IMF this month
WASHINGTON, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Philippine Finance Minister Edgardo Espiritu said on Sunday he expected the International Monetary Fund to release a $261 million payment from Manila's $1.4 billion standby loan later this month.

Espiritu, in Washington to attend annual meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, told Reuters he expected the IMF board to discuss the payment around October 21 and the money would then be handed over.

The Philippines prolonged an IMF credit last year to help shield its economy from the impact of a wave of devaluations across Asia.

Ministers said at the time they did not intend to use the money, but they changed their minds last month after the financial crisis on emerging markets deepened.

An economic review conducted at that time forecast 1.5 percent growth in gross national product this year, picking up to 4.1 percent next year. The two sides had earlier expected growth of 2-3 percent this year.

From the NZMA thread:

>>I am sure most of you have read the "glowing" review of Vinik's hedge-fund 1998 record in the most recent Barrons. I went to my contacts and confirmed that he, Vinik, snookered M. Santoli (the article's author) by "selectively" revealing only those trading records that deal outside of his very core positions. If one would look at those names printed in his shill piece you could accurately surmise that he would have to be perfect in timing and perfect in exit inorder to have those type of gains. He is clearly, as usual, full of S..T and is once again successful in manipulating the media (don't forget the past Micron saga) to his benefit. I am told he will be opening up the fund at year end to Q1 99 for new $$.....his egotistical goal is to become a mega-hedge fund, ala Quantum or Tiger.<<

Anyone know of the saga of which he speaks?
