Correct. It was the fact that the US was the only undamaged country after WWII which had substantially increased industrial capacity so that it could supply the rebuilding of the rest of the world that created our pretentious wealth of the '50s. It was the war overbuilding and heavy expenditures coupled with a need to transform industry into a domestic serving one that created the post war inflation. Lots of money chasing a paucity of the right goods. It was then, 4 years after VJ day, that the effects of the depression had finally run its course.

Britain's gold came to the US for safe keeping. Most nations keep a substantial quantity of their gold in the US. It's safer here than there. This on-going resentment among Britons towards the US makes no sense based on Lend Lease ramifications. The two nations are irrevocably linked. Churchill would have resented any comment about war reparations presumably taken by the US. I had thought that that issue was dead and buried long ago.
