Ameritech to Provide High-Speed Computer Links To University of Michigan's Off-Campus Students, Faculty

Agreement Will Make ADSL Available to up to 20,000; Contract Marks One of the Single Largest Commercial Deployments of ADSL

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- In what will be one of the single largest commercial deployments of ADSL, Ameritech today announced an agreement with the University of Michigan to make the service available off campus to up to 20,000 students, faculty and staff.

Ameritech ADSL will give users a remote link to the university's data network where they can access the Internet and a host of other resources at speeds of up to 1.5 megabits per second, or 50 times faster than a standard phone line and modem. At that rate, the entire Encyclopedia Britannica would take 31 minutes to download, compared with 27 hours using a standard modem. The service will be available to off-campus students and faculty beginning in January.

"Given the demanding pace at universities today, students, faculty, and staff need to be able to access information quickly and easily," said Andy Palms, manager at the University of Michigan's Information Technology Division. "On campus, we offer high-speed computer access through high-speed ethernet connections. But those living off campus have had to depend on slower, dial-in connections. With the ADSL technology, we can offer the same high-speed benefits to the Ann Arbor residences of students, faculty and staff. This will improve their productivity from their homes."

Ameritech ADSL service will make it easier for off-campus students, faculty and staff to use a wider range of high-speed applications.

"This new service will enable the U-M community to access instructional modules, multimedia information resources and complex software programs in a timely, cost-effective manner. We are pleased to partner with Ameritech to shrink the gap between the information technology performance experienced on and off campus," said Dr. Jose Marie Griffiths, University of Michigan chief information officer and executive director of the information technology division.

Because ADSL is "always on," there is no need to log on to connect to the Internet or the university network.

"Students today depend on the Internet and data links to other resources to be successful," said Greg Brown, president of Ameritech custom business services. "ADSL is the perfect solution for students who live off campus. At the University of Michigan, it will enable off-campus students and faculty to share the same local area network."

The University of Michigan, a leader in the use of technology in education, has a student enrollment of more than 51,000 and about 5,900 faculty on three campuses. It supports the largest research program of any public university in the country, with more than $450 million in annual research expenditures, and its academic programs are consistently ranked among the top in the nation.
