To define the issue precisely: the civil war was fought to determine whether a group of states which had achieved a majority in both houses of government could impose policies on another group which did not wish to submit to them.

The protectionist policies implemented to serve the interests of northern industrialists would have reduced the south to the level of a colony, a purpose which was eventually achieved by other means. Many wars have been fought for more obscure reasons.

Fascinating subject for discussion, but not the right venue. Is there a US history thread?
