Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Interactive Unleash Akuji the Heartless This December

Akuji the Heartless Brings Voodoo Magic, Blood Sacrifices, and Zombies to the Sony PlayStation

MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 1998--Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Interactive will release the fearsome voodoo-themed action game Akuji the Heartless on Sony PlayStation. Players will guide the heroic voodoo priest Akuji through action-packed 3D worlds full of voodoo spells, ritual sacrifices and grisly denizens of the underworld. Akuji the Heartless will be available nationwide in December at a suggested retail price of $49.99.

''Voodoo meets video games for the first time in Akuji the Heartless,'' said Scott Steinberg, vice president of marketing for Crystal Dynamics. ''This is a huge 3D game packed with a highly kinetic action character and an epic storyline that compels players to explore the depths of the underworld.''

Eidos Interactive and Crystal Dynamics will pave the way for the launch of Akuji the Heartless with a strong consumer marketing and retail push. Pre-sell marketing initiatives include: a multiple direct mailings to Eidos Interactive's and Crystal Dynamics consumer database; an extensive print advertising campaign in key gaming magazines and DC Comics through March 1999; advertising banners on key online sites; tens of thousands of interactive demos for promotional and retail giveaways with Electronic Boutique and Babbages; retailer co-op advertising; a radio giveaway promotion in top media markets; and a strong public relations push.

Akuji the Heartless is a fast paced, 3D combat action epic set in a grim underworld filled with dank rooms and spells powered by voodoo. As Akuji, players will ravage more than 30 different types of enemies with multiple hand-to-hand combat moves and 11 powerful voodoo spells such as ''fire storm'' and ''shadow's wrath.'' Using voodoo magic, players can morph themselves into a fearsome panther. The primitive voodoo environments use vertex lighting to enhance the gaming experience.

Story

In the land of Mamora, where voodoo reigns and the passions of the people rival that of their gods, feuds run deep...blood feuds, the deepest. On his wedding day, the powerful voodoo priest Akuji was murdered by his brother Orad, a powerful voodoo priest in his own right. Orad's minions killed Akuji by ripping out his heart...thus condemning him to the underworld. To escape the underworld, rescue his beloved bride Kesho and wreak vengeance, Akuji must locate the spirits of his ancestors and use their power to break the barriers between the underworld and Mamora.
