--Compaq Services, Worldwide Prime Integrator for Windows NT, extends its multi-million-dollar contract with Microsoft's Internet Operations, including The Microsoft Network, Microsoft Corporation, and MSNBC Internet sites.
--John Rando, Senior Vice President and Group General Manager, Compaq Services, calls two-year deal "a prime example of FutureSourcing services" for which Microsoft relies on Compaq for next-generation technology, management and support through the year 2000.
Compaq Computer Corporation CPQ today announced a two-year extension of its management and support services contract for Microsoft Corporation's Internet sites. The multi-million-dollar deal encompasses lifecycle global services for The Microsoft Network (MSN.com), Microsoft's Web site, (Microsoft.com), and its 24-hour online news service (MSNBC.com).
"We have experienced more than 100 percent growth year over year in Internet traffic," said Dave Gasiewicz, General Manager, Microsoft Worldwide Infrastructure Operations. "Even in this dynamic and demanding environment, Compaq has delivered the critical worldwide management services while driving down operational costs." With this latest contract extension through the year 2000, the total value of the service relationship will more than double since the original agreement in 1994. To accommodate the explosive growth in Microsoft's online business, services provided by Digital Equipment Corporation and now Compaq have grown significantly, with server and network management expanding from one site to four sites. Compaq is also providing a worldwide support model as well as administration and support services for Microsoft Commercial Internet Systems and Microsoft SQL Server management.
"This service relationship with Microsoft is a prime example of FutureSourcing, in which companies rely on Compaq Services as a single point of contact to implement, support, and manage their next-generation technology infrastructure," said John Rando, Senior Vice President and Group General Manager, Compaq Services. "Compaq provides more than 15 years of experience in managing complex, multivendor systems, networks and applications, so our customers can focus on growing their business."
Showcase for Compaq Services and Microsoft Technologies
Microsoft Internet Data Centers - with more than 1,000 Compaq servers - comprise one of the world's largest Microsoft Windows NT-based operations. The Centers are the premier installation of Microsoft Commercial Internet Systems, providing such capabilities as mail, chat, bulletin board, news feeds, and search functions. Users access more than three terabytes of information each day when they visit sites such as MSN online service, Microsoft.com, MSNBC, the Expedia travel series, Sidewalk city guide, Slate online magazine, Home Advisor online real estate service, and CarPoint online automotive service.
Microsoft transmits the information to the Internet using Compaq Intel and Alpha-based servers, Cisco Systems routers, Cabletron GIGAswitches and Fore Systems ATM switches from four locations worldwide. More information on Microsoft.com operations and capabilities is available at microsoft.com.
Compaq's new contract with Microsoft also represents an upgrade in service at a lower cost per server. These achievements are due to improvements in the Windows NT operating system-based enterprise technology and advances in Compaq Services' operational processes over the past four years.
Compaq Services provides the following to Microsoft:
--Support services for Microsoft customer service personnel, wide area network providers and application development and support teams
--Operations support and facilities management for servers and local area network equipment
--Windows NT-based administration services
--Network management services
--Microsoft SQL Server administration services for more than 2,000 SQL databases supporting Microsoft Internet businesses
--Microsoft Commercial Internet Systems administration and support services
--Server and system monitoring configuration services
Rando added, "This agreement is another example of Compaq's capabilities as Worldwide Prime Integrator for Windows NT. It highlights Microsoft's confidence in the global lifecycle services that Compaq provides to its customers who are designing and deploying business critical solutions using Microsoft BackOffice technology and NT Server in their enterprise. We provide networking and infrastructure solutions, from architecture and design through deployment, support, and ongoing management with our FutureSourcing capabilities."
Earlier this year, Microsoft recognized Digital (now Compaq) as its first Worldwide Prime Integrator for Windows NT and BackOffice technologies in the enterprise. With more than 2,200 Microsoft-certified support engineers, Compaq is the world's largest provider of Microsoft-related services.
