National Semiconductor Announces Plans to Restructure and Spin Out Wafer Manufacturing Operations in Scotland

biz.yahoo.com

NSM is trying to get rid of uncompetitive capacity. But:

National attributed the actions to continuing weakness in the global semiconductor market, which has resulted in underutilization of the company's wafer manufacturing sites worldwide, excluding the company's new 0.25-micron facility in South Portland, Maine, which is operating at full capacity.

NSM is in a tough situation. A lot of the capacity is underutilized and uncompetitive. The new fab is not fully equipped yet. NSM has to weigh every dollar spent on new equipment during this downturn.

I think I read on Yahoo that they are processing 10,000 / month. And total capacity is supposed to be 30,000. So we have a way to go. I guess the rest of the fab will be equipped with equipment capable of .18u
