NEWS: Hitachi Server Line Expanded with Premier Enterprise 8-way Intel Pentium II Xeon-powered Model

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 6, 1998--

New Hitachi VisionBase 8880 Server Brings Hitachi's Mainframe

Quality into PC Server Marketplace

Expanding its presence in the Windows NT-based high-end server market, Hitachi PC today announced a new model in its VisionBase line of enterprise servers.

One of the industry's first 8-way Intel Pentium II Xeon-based servers, the VisionBase 8880 delivers on Hitachi PC's goal of developing servers that provide the solid performance and reliability of Hitachi's renowned mainframes.

Packing premium features at very competitive price points, the VisionBase 8880 is powered by up to eight 400MHz Xeon processors and offers exclusive Hitachi System Management (HSM) software on units loaded with Windows NT, to ensure easy manageability, both locally and remotely.

It also features high-performance I/O including Ultra SCSI, and fibre channel and LAN peripherals tuned for exceptional throughput. The Hitachi VisionBase 8880 is expected to begin shipping in December.

Solidifying Hitachi's notebook-to-network commitment to its corporate customers, the VisionBase 8880 is tightly integrated with Windows NT, and is tested for compatibility with Unix and NetWare environments. Its CPU, memory, disk drives, I/O and network subsystems are all fully upgradeable. And with redundancy in cooling, power supply and RAID disk storage, the VisionBase 8880 is extremely reliable. Configure-to-order flexibility is available for corporate customers, and the VisionBase 8880 is fully backed by Hitachi service and support.

"Hitachi's historical role as a leader in developing mission-critical technologies continues with the debut of the VisionBase 8880," said vice president of servers, Michael Krieger.

"As one of the first to market with an enterprise server to employ Intel's groundbreaking Xeon processor, with the VisionBase 8880, we have affirmed our commitment to supplying corporate customers with the latest technology for enhanced performance."

"The way computer systems are managed is changing quickly, and our servers provide the reliability and upgradability sought after by IT professionals. We recognize the mission-critical necessity of having access to information on servers 100 percent of the time.

"Our HSM software makes both on-site and remote manageability of networks easier and will enable the prevention of many types of failures, so the VisionBase 8880 is a very practical solution.

"By helping companies maintain around-the-clock access to information and also enabling IT professionals to work effectively from remote locations, the VisionBase product extends our vision of mobilized computing," Krieger said.

NEWS: Siemens to Integrate Mylex Fibre Channel Raid Controllers Into New Line of External Server Storage Systems; Mylex Expands Long-Standing OEM Relationship with Siemens

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 6, 1998)--Mylex Corp. (Nasdaq:MYLX), the world's leading RAID controller vendor in the non-captive network systems marketplace, today announced Siemens Information and Communication Products has integrated Mylex's Fibre Channel RAID controller technology into Siemens' new line of high-performance external storage systems.

The controller, the DAC960SF, is the second Mylex controller to be incorporated into Siemens' Primergy Server and Storage Subsystem line. Siemens has been integrating Mylex's Ultra SCSI-to-Ultra SCSI RAID controller, the DAC960SX, since February.

"Siemens is a valued Mylex OEM partner, and we're pleased they have chosen to extend our long-standing relationship to include our Fibre Channel technology," said Ron MacLeod, Mylex vice president of Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

"This arrangement allows Siemens to introduce its first Fibre Channel storage system for the Intel server platform, and address an essential requirement for clustering environments."

DAC960SF Delivers Superior Performance, Flexibility and Manageability

The DAC960SF integrates the latest Fibre Channel technology to deliver higher bandwidth connectivity over greater distances than is possible with SCSI technology.

Fibre Channel provides over 100 MB/sec data transfer rates over a serial link, greatly simplifying cable routing and maintenance, and delivering unmatched performance without sacrificing data reliability. The DAC960SF is capable of sustaining disk transfer rates of up to 52 MB/sec and burst cache transfer rates of 97 MB/sec.

The DAC960SF is extremely well suited for operation in a clustered environment. With two copper FC-AL (Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop) host channels and six wide Ultra SCSI drive channels, the DAC960SF is the flexible Fibre Channel performance leader.

The DAC960SF is dual active and dual processor enabled, supporting cutting edge technologies such as cache mirroring and reserve/release clustering.

In addition to providing the manageability benefits of Fibre Channel, the DAC960SF also ships standard with Mylex's best-selling Global Array Manager (GAM) software. GAM enables the RAID system to be configured, maintained and monitored remotely over the Internet or corporate intranet. GAM ships standard with Mylex's entire RAID controller product line.

Mylex's GAM software was an important consideration for Siemens because Siemens already integrates the software into its line of Intel-based PC servers, which utilize Mylex host-based RAID controllers. GAM enables Siemens to offer its customers centralized RAID manageability and a consistent interface across its entire line of PC servers and external storage servers.
