Well bp it is this law that has caused Oracle to be out of reach of its employees. And dont you see that as long as a law like this exists, then ANY company that is over 10 years old and flourishing is going to have this problem. Ex. Intel relocates to somewhere. Houses around intel are cheap - once. Intel starts to do well, prices rise in the area. Normally, the market would change such that those that didnt reap any benefits from being next door to intel would move (probably to a nicer location btw). No need to feel sorry for these folks, they would have made a lot of money and there are TONS of beautiful places in Ca to move - napa, Sonoma etc. Then, the intel execs could move into the overpriced not so nice houses that are next to intel because of the convenience factor - thats how it SHOULD work.

Oracle and Intel/Cisco etc have made some substantial investments in their HQ bldgs and it is just not feasible to ask these companies to move every 10 years just to get around this real estate "lock in" law.

BTW all companies have telecommuting and many export labor requirements to ireland etc but can anyone give me an example where a telecommuter is as productive as an regular employee. It works for some isolation jobs, yes but thats about it.

bp,

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this, but last I looked the Oracle campus in Silicon Valley is surrounded by water--a veritable island! The only creatures that could be displaced to make room for housing "next door to Oracle" are fish and ducks! But then you'd run into a whole new heap of headaches from California Fish and Game and the Costal Commission.

Telecommuting is the only way to fly! If Oracle, Cisco, etc., do not do telecommuting, I would be astounded. Employer-sponsored carpooling and vanpooling also are very big up here--and quite chic, really.

BTW, you are right on target about houses and values and what the market will bear, and a lot of millionaires of both sexes have gotten there via the sweat equity route.
