What's wrong with re-inventing the (2D) wheel? Everyone needs a wheel, so you can re-invent one, or buy someone elses (lower quality, and you don't get the profit, they do) wheel. Of all the players on the market till now, only Matrox had good 2D. Every other company out there had ABYSMAL 2D performance.

Point is, it's done now. They have the 2D part, and can concentrate on the 3D core. Timelines slip, but I think they did an awesome job with Banshee. I don't think of it so much as their next great product, as much as the first prototype of a new product family. I suspect many at 3dfx would feel that the banshee is something they HAD to make, rather than something they wanted to make. But I also think that they did a great job, and the company and its investors will be rewarded for their efforts.
