George, you are much too intellectual for me. With my Sun God and Son of God, I was just generally referring to the fact that Jesus's birthday of December 25, which we know is not when he was really born, puts him in very good company with all of the myriad sun gods who share the same day of birth. Of course, this is because the sun is born after the very darkest day of winter, in late December. I have also read analyses of symbolism which suggest that Jesus' halo is suggestive of son gods. And then you have the very interesting period in Celtic crosses, when Christianity was being absorbed by British Isles' pagans, where there is a cross with a circle as well, representing perhaps a combination or blending of the two belief systems. And Jesus' mother, Mary, was worshipped as a goddess until at least the twelfth century. My husband was talking to someone from Ireland a few days ago, who was very excited by the Celtic revival there. The population is very young--half of it under twenty-five. They are embracing the culture of their ancestors as they understand it, and rejecting Catholicism. A young Irishwoman from Cork who worked at my office this summer told me the same thing, and I read it in the Irish papers, as well. All those priests molesting children, and the efforts of religious leaders to cover it all up, brought out the hypocrisy of the Church. Now it is reeling under many multi-million dollar settlements brought by the molested. Only 10% of English people still attend Christian churches, and Druidism is the fastest-growing religion. My heart beats with pagan excitement at all this!! Anyway, I think there is quite a bit of sun god stuff going on with Jesus, which is what started this ramble.
