1) Because a lot of great businesses are now selling at extremely attractive prices. I was very,very pleased that I could buy BT at 54 3/4, AMAT at 22 5/8, and COST at 41 7/8 today (I bought 8 different issues in all). Can they go lower? Yes. Fortunately, since I'm not a margin gambler, I have a lot of patience and a lot of firepower.

2) I'm also convinced that the U.S. economic outlook is anywhere near as grim as many would believe.
