This is an old chestnut, but it fits here. Samuel Johnson, who was a critic of Bishop Berkeley's philosophical notion that the world was a sensory illusion, went strolling with a companion, and arriving at a rather large stone in the road, kicked it, saying, "Thus I refute Berkeley."

The companion reported that Johnson walked home with a limp.
