j_b,

There is affordable property in Solano County and selected cities in Contra Costa County, notably Martinez (the County Seat), Crockett, Rodeo, Concord, Antioch, Pittsburg, Richmond (now Bay Pointe), and others.

I am not very familiar with the South Bay (Alameda and Santa Clara Counties) or San Mateo, Sonoma, or Santa Cruz Counties, but I am sure affordable housing exists in areas there, as well. There are anxious and motivated sellers, even in the most desirable and affluent areas.

All the major California and many of the lesser newspapers are available online. Run a search through their real estate sections, and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

I can assure you that million-dollar houses are not the norm--even in the SF Bay Area.
