Yes, I think the Yen is a short.

However, that is completely separate from what my post was about - I was trying to explain how you can "synthetically" borrow yen to (e.g.) finance your USD house mortgage. That is, borrowing USD, and shorting an equivalent amount of Yen. Very much like how a "covered call" is synthetically equivalent to a "short put"
