OIL & GAS STATISTICS/REPORTS - SATURDAY A.M. 10/17/98U.S. rig count down 10 to 740 week Oct. 16 The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States stood at 740 as of October 16, down 10 from the previous week, and down from 987 a year ago, oil services firm Baker Hughes Inc. said Friday. The number of rigs drilling on land fell eight to 608, while rigs working offshore fell one to 112. The number of rigs active in inland waters fell one to 20. The Gulf of Mexico rig count slipped one to 108. The number of rigs searching for gas rose five to 529, the number of rigs searching for oil fell 15 to 211. There were 186 rigs exploring directionally, 34 exploring horizontally, and 520 exploring vertically. In Canada, the number of working rigs fell 44 from the previous week, to 126 compared with 437 a year ago. The states with largest number of changes in their rig counts were Oklahoma, which was down six, California, up two, and Wyoming, up two. The weekly rig count reflects the number of rigs exploring for oil and gas, not those producing oil and gas. The utilization rate for rigs working in the Gulf, based on a total fleet of 176, was 79.5 percent. The number of working rigs in the European/Mediterranean area remained at 109 rigs under contract out of a total fleet of 113, a utilization rate of 96.5 percent.
