Michael, it is actually pre-market trading.

Holdouts. Many times when Dell is falling you can see it in the ask price and the sellers keep asking for the higher price even though there is no hope.

This morning we have the price moving up so sellers have raised the price at which they would sell. The buyers are the holdouts this morning as the ask price is still down. Since the sellers aren't going to sell at the lower price it is misleading.

It corrects in the last few minutes prior to trading with migration toward each other. On up days, the migration will be mostly up toward the ask price. On down days, the reverse.
