Indigo has not turned out the way many anticipated. First, Heather Reisman has not ironed out all the bugs in her flagship store in Toronto. Have seen her rant and rave at her staff on numerous occassions at the Yonge/Eglinton store. Second, she does not have the money to expand as rapidly as Chapters (this is where the Coles/Smithbooks franchise gives Chapters incredible flexibility). No offence, but Chapters has better strategic planning and consultants (Barnes & Nobles for superstores, realty people for locations and retail specialists on store layout and demographics). The Canadian market can only handle about 100 superstores and Chapters will have 50 by the end of this year and 75 by 2000. My dream scenario is that Canada enters the 21st century by removing its restrictive policies on magazines and bookstores, and Barnes and Nobles buys out Chapters.
