XYLN this morning: Canada's MetroNet Chooses Xylan for Nationwide Data Service CALABASAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 6, 1998--Xylan Corp. (Nasdaq:XYLN - news) Tuesday announced that it has signed a multiyear contract with MetroNet Communications Corp. [Nasdaq:METNF - news], Canada's largest Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC). MetroNet will use Xylan's OmniSwitch as the broadband access device to enable it to offer the most robust and cost-effective Managed WAN and Transparent LAN Service (TLS) in Canada. As Canada's leading CLEC, MetroNet is aggressively targeting the traditional monopoly of the regional telephone companies of the Sentor Alliance by providing Canadian businesses a secure, highly reliable and seamless Canada-wide voice and data network. ''The Managed WAN Service and TLS allows us to offer a differentiated product that matches the high-bandwidth needs of our customers,'' said Ron Preston, MetroNet's senior vice president of operations and technology. ''Xylan's integrated solution significantly reduces the cost of service implementation and operation, which is important as we aggressively expand the service across Canada.'' ''Xylan has emerged as one of the leaders in providing access equipment for a wide range of high-speed data services,'' said Stephen Justus, Xylan vice president and general manager of the service provider business unit. ''We're working with some of the most aggressive and advanced carriers in the business, and we're excited to establish this partnership with MetroNet.'' Since selecting Xylan as the broadband access device, MetroNet acquired Rogers Telecom Inc. Rogers Telecom had one of Canada's largest ATM networks and had captured the majority of Canada's Transparent LAN Service business. Rogers Telecom also had selected Xylan as its broadband access device. Xylan enabled Rogers Telecom's TLS to be the fastest growing and most successful service offering that Rogers Telecom had ever launched. Xylan's robust partitioning capability ensures MetroNet's clients the highest level of security offered by any TLS provider in Canada. About MetroNet ''Built for business,'' MetroNet Communications is Canada's first national provider of local telecommunications services and the country's largest competitive local exchange service provider. Deploying the most advanced fibre-optic networking and switching platforms, MetroNet offers business and government customers across the country a full suite of voice and data services with one point of contact, excellent customer service and competitive pricing. MetroNet is a public company with its common stock traded on the Toronto and Montreal stock exchanges under the symbol MNC.B and on the Nasdaq National Market System under the symbol METNF. About Xylan Xylan is one of the leading switching companies in the world; its products combine LAN switching, ATM switching, layer-three switching, and wide area switching over a wide range of interfaces and media. Xylan's switches are distinguished by advanced architectures and chip designs, and by any-to-any switching. The same XOS software powers a full range of Xylan switches, from small workgroup Ethernet switches to large multilayer backbone switches. As a result, a Xylan network is able to deliver cohesive services, in both end user and service provider networks. Xylan's Switched Network Services initiative takes switching to the next step: a comprehensive set of services, including DHCP, network address translation, LDAP, RADIUS, DNS, multicast switching and routing, RSVP, wide area compression, broadcast management, policy-based configuration and multilayer accounting. Many of these services are already shipping. This news release may contain forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties.
