Computer Associates Launches The First Open Fibre Channel Backup Solution For Storage Area Networks

ISLANDIA, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--October 6, 1998--

Partners With Compaq, Hewlett Packard And ADIC To Deliver

ArcserveIT Option For Fibre Channel Environments

Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) today announced the general availability of the industry's first multi-vendor Fibre Channel backup solution: Enterprise Library Option (ELO). ELO, part of CA's ARCserveIT Enterprise Edition, provides enhanced scalability and efficient utilization of storage resources by sharing high-capacity, higher cost devices across Storage Area Networks (SANs).

Today's information-intensive enterprise demands high-speed, high-availability storage for large databases, images, and audio/video data. In addition, as new applications are moved closer to the user, the quantity of data stored on distributed servers is growing rapidly. Furthermore, the number of servers in the enterprise is also rising, greatly increasing the amount of traffic on the network, which is required to share critical data. SANs address these concerns by placing shared storage resources on a storage-exclusive Fibre Channel network, thereby eliminating the bandwidth limitations associated with moving large amounts of data over conventional networks.

Until now, one problem preventing the implementation of SANs has been the lack of optimized data protection. Back up servers on the network had either their own "captive" tape devices or would depend on remote devices. ARCserveIT Enterprise Edition -- along with the Enterprise Library Option and third-party vendor hardware solutions

-- now creates a dedicated storage network. ARCserveIT, its Enterprise Library Option and the underlying SANs:

- Improve backup and restore speed

- Indirectly improve the performance of the enterprise IP/Ethernet network by off-loading storage traffic

- Enable centralized management of storage for all applications and servers

- Offer true scalability for growing enterprises

- Provide the flexibility to share one or more libraries among multiple servers

ARCserveIT and its Enterprise Library Option solve the dedicated storage device problem by enabling several devices from key vendors to be shared among multiple backup servers on the SAN. Increasing performance is as simple as adding another backup server to the loop. Increasing capacity is as simple as adding another tape library to the SAN. No additional increase in enterprise network traffic or rebuilding/reconfiguration of the enterprise storage strategy is required.

CA has been and will continue to work aggressively with leading vendors to drive the evolution of new storage technology such as Storage Area Networks. The Enterprise Library Option was developed in cooperation with Compaq Computer Corporation. CA also worked closely with other industry-leaders, including ADIC, Crossroads, Emulex and Hewlett-Packard, so that ARCserveIT can provide optimal integration with each partner's solution - ensuring high performance and reliability.

"Compaq and Computer Associates enjoy a long history of developing solutions that fulfill a wide range of customer requirements, from single-server backup to enterprise-wide storage management," said Darren Thomas, vice president of the Multi-Vendor Storage Business Unit of Compaq's Storage Products Division. "Today's announcement of the Enterprise Library Option for ARCserveIT, the latest co-development effort by CA and Compaq, allows customers to back up critical data via a fibre-channel based solution. This new product represents a huge step forward for enterprise computing. CA's entry assures that storage networks will be an integral part of end-to-end storage management for the enterprise."

"Hewlett-Packard Company and Computer Associates are committed to providing enterprise customers with best-of-breed automated backup solutions," said Gil Merme, general manager for HP's Storage Systems Division. "CA's ARCserveIT family of storage solutions represent the most comprehensive in the market today, featuring extensive multi-platform support and an array of valuable new Options for the enterprise market. HP recently announced a Fibre Channel solution that allows up to eight servers, connected to a Fibre Channel arbitrated loop, to be backed up sequently with a HP SureStore DLT 15-slot Library. CA has been instrumental in helping HP bring that Fibre Channel solution to fruition."

"ADIC is pleased to be able to offer hardware support for the Fibre Channel backup capabilities of the new ARCserveIT Enterprise Library Option," said Jonathan Otis, ADIC vice president of product development "It signals the beginning of the era of flexible, high performance, LAN-free backup. The coordinated work that the two companies have done will make it possible for CA customers to dynamically share their ADIC tape libraries and tape drives between multiple servers -- while giving each server the kind of data transfer performance now achievable only by direct SCSI channel connection. This architecture will create a paradigm shift in the way that IT departments store, protect, and access their data."

Central management of multiple storage platforms - including SANs, network-attached storage and server-attached devices -- under the TNG Framework provides multiple benefits for enterprise customers. For example, IT managers can easily manage, prioritize and queue backup jobs in an arbitrated loop. They can also reconfigure or re-direct backup jobs if a device fails, significantly enhancing overall performance and storage management. ARCserveIT Enterprise also adds additional data protection and data management to the Fibre Channel SAN. By utilizing ARCserveITs' new Fibre channel-aware options such as Disaster Recovery, Image, Data Migration and the free RAID technology, the benefits to the customer and their organization using a comprehensive storage solution on this new platform invariably outweigh the investment cost.
