A lot of newer chips NEED 0.18um, not just 0.25um. The excess 0.35um capacity is just going to be shut down. For Cyrix's MXi CPU, they are planning to ship Q2 '99 with 0.18um. Intel is going to start 0.18um soon, and a year from now, they should be able to attack the sub-$500 market with gusto with that process and the older 0.25um process.

Single-chip cable modem, SCSI 3, xDSL, 3D graphics w/24M DRAMs!, 128MDRAM/PC, gigabit ethernets, RSIC java-engines for net appliances etc. etc. By the end of Q2 '99, sub-0.20um will be a great shortage.

DISCLAIMER: above assumes the Republicans will follow Monica's lead and swallow their politics and join the democrats in beating up AG to lower interest rates another 2 % points to get all the economies moving.
