PBS' "Next Generation" TV

Viewers of PBS' new "enhanced TV" programming of Ken Burns' Frank Lloyd Wright documentary will also be able to access long-form interviews with Burns' experts, historic chats with Wright, and a variety of interactive options. This will be made possible via Intel's Intercast video streaming and multimedia technology.

Intercast transport technology enables digital information to be sent inside the Vertical Blanking Interval of a digital broadcast signal. Intercast Tools assembles digital data at PBS headquarters in Alexandria VA and schedules insertion into the signal. The enhanced signal is received by a set-top box or TV-enabled PC. In the latter case, reception and processing are typically accomplished through a TV tuner that is equipped with a video capture and decoder chip that's bundled with Intel Intercast Viewer software.

The enhanced Frank Lloyd Wright program will be Intel's first venture into digital signal transmission. Several manufacturers (among them Zenith) are working on a DTV receiver card that Intel will adapt to PC standards. The card will connect to a DTV antenna at the back of a PC.
