Housing Market Index Has Mixed Results in October

WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Home Builders' Housing Market Index edged up in October but contained some signals that housing demand may soften before long. Traffic of prospective buyers was down sharply while ratings of current sales conditions were up significantly and pushed the overall index to a new high of 73.

''Thanks to low mortgage rates, builders see current market conditions as very good, but given the drop off of prospective buyers visiting model homes and the recent erosion of consumer confidence, the indication is that the housing market will be slowing a bit in the months ahead from today's very strong pace of activity,'' said Kent W. Colton, NAHB's executive vice president. Colton also noted that some builders voiced concern about the stock market's recent volatility.
