Hey E Testoronus! Wonderful article in BW about "Silicon Eyes" - also a chart showing that digital cameras will be around 5 million units next year, 10 million in 2000 and 20 million units in 2001. Not all good though because Mr. INTC has invested quite heavily in this area but as your recent link pointed out - INTC going the PC connection route - which may not be a bad idea all things considered. But I do think about the quality. Shane! (It is all MERELY the clearing out of the weaker hands before the multi-year boom run <g>) <!-- snippet follows -->Silicon Eyes Will Soon Be Everywhere CONSUMER PHOTOGRAPHY New ''smart sensors'' will automatically correct exposure and allow images to be edited, by cropping or reducing redeye, right on the camera. COMPUTERS ''Eyeball'' digital cameras will be built into monitors for video mail or for verifying the user's identity. Keyboards with built-in fingerprint scanners will substitute for passwords. HANDHELD GADGETS Small digital cameras will soon become common accessories for cellular telephones and personal digital assistants. RETAILING Fingerprint and retinal scanners that can instantly verify someone's identity will be widely used by retail stores, banks, and government agencies. MEDICINE Imaging chips may help blind people see and will be commonly used in surgery. CARS Digital cameras will supplement rearview mirrors, check tire pressure, and monitor occupants as part of advanced safety systems INDUSTRY Among hundreds of possible applications, digital technology will sharply reduce the cost of sophisticated security systems and allow aircraft makers to monitor hard-to-reach places inside airframes. I was guessing this would be around mid-2000 at the earliest. Tack on a bit of server fun in the interim and a bit more for their (new found) love of consumer electronics and networking and just maybe you can't go wrong with Mr. INTC (even now!) <hmmmm very interesting... - the time man cometh early> And on yet another topic: Semi-equips hitting the third level - KLIC under $10 there for awhile - not too shabby! FSII under 4 1/2. AMAT just squeaking above the 52 wk. low., UTEK has relented the last few weeks and is now under 15, COHU under 15... They are going through another downdraft - the next level comes a crashing. Still have not bought - could not even if I wanted to - out of cash!
