Doug - Good points.

I think the RBOC's already have the VPN capability within and among their own LEC LATA's and POP's - they just can't get legal authority to get the nation/world-wide geographical coverage to make it more viable and are thus hamstrung into having to provide local connections to (while competing with) more agile service providers that can (as in your example, the carriers). But for a LEC to get VOIP requires a CO fork-lift upgrade eventually, and if they don't do it, they'll lose a considerable portion of their local business consumer base, then the "connected" consumers, and be nothing but wire and "basic" phone service providers.

It's gonna' be bloody. And they'll be spending money like water out of a fire hose if they (LECs) think they can make money out of it.

Good for CSCO, LU, etc., etc.
