[MCI WorldCom Announces Plans for National Networks in France, Germany and Great Britain]

Builds on unique assets and success to bring new level of competition to 60% of European market for telecommunications

New key European destinations for MCI WorldCom On-Net Customers

LONDON, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI WorldCom announced today that it is more than doubling the size of its pan-European fibre optic network to provide national coverage in Great Britain, France and Germany. This 7,150 kilometer (4,290 mile) expansion of its existing 3,200 kilometer (2,000 mile) European backbone will bring the benefits of its portfolio of on-net local-to-global-to-local telecommunications services currently available in London, Paris and Frankfurt to customers throughout Britain, France and Germany. Network coverage and product availability will be rolled out through 1999.

By the end of 1999, MCI WorldCom will be able to offer a complete local, long distance and international phone service to any customer connected to the public switched network in all three countries and high-speed long distance, private line and data communications services to businesses in 45 European metropolitan areas. The international portfolio of all these services will leverage MCI WorldCom's unique end-to-end owned and managed global fiber optic network linking Europe to the Americas and Asia-Pacific region to offer world-class quality and value.

"We have proved our ability to meet customer demand for quality and value in Europe's international telecommunications market. We have also evolved our national businesses from simple resale outfits into fully licensed facilities-based operators complete with metropolitan, international, and sub-oceanic cable systems," said Liam Strong, president and chief executive officer of MCI WorldCom International. "We are now scaling up to address the local and national opportunity in what accounts for up to 60 percent of Europe's market for telecommunications services. More significantly, customers throughout Britain, France and Germany will be able to access our unique global network. Customers won't have to be in the country's financial capital to get our unique telecomms services."

MCI WorldCom will install data and voice communications facilities in 20 new cities connected by the network. These will provide customers with national and international high-speed private circuit, local-area-network interconnection, frame relay and ATM services as well as local, national and international switched voice. Separate announcements will be made regarding the future installation of metropolitan area networks in certain of these towns and cities.

As with MCI WorldCom's existing long distance network in Europe, the process of installing the long distance fibre optic network has been accelerated through the acquisition of rights of way and dark fibre from a number of utility and transport organisations as well as WorldCom's own installations. All transmission electronics and network management will be built by WorldCom to the same high quality, resilient, Synchronous Digital Hierarchy architecture common to its existing metropolitan area, international and intercontinental cable networks.

* Hoping ASND gets some of this business. Thought I would post something that might be positive.

Apologies to MightyMizzou. . .

It seems you are more interested in twisting my points around than you are in understanding what I am saying. Perhaps it's time to agree to disagree, and leave it at that. But let me wrap up by saying the following:

Not so at all. I'm a writer and researcher and look at words carefully. Don't abuse them and I'll have no reason to question your verity. To that end, I'll just wrap up with a few brief comments:

1) AT&T is an Ascend account. The press release you are refering to is of AT&T acting as a reseller for Newbridge's switches to enterprises. I know because I talk to AT&T.

I've never heard the AT&T contract called a re-seller agreement.

This solution set includes the 3600 and 3645 MainStreet bandwidth management products and the MainStreetXpress™ 36170 Multiservices Switch, 36150 Access Switch, 36100 Access Concentrator, and 36035/75 Local Area Network Service Units. The family of network and service management systems includes the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager, 45020 Element Manager, 48020 Multinetwork Service Controller, 56020 Routing Services Control Point, Connext Exec, and Customer Service Management.

AT&T plans to take the lion's share of the growing enterprise network outsourcing market using the Newbridge Global Services Management Platform (GSMP).

The increasing complexity of network services has many enterprises looking for help — fueling a fast growing market for professional managed services. As the world's premier communications and information services company, AT&T plans to grab a big slice of this new business.

AT&T Solutions will offer a suite of managed bandwidth services to thousands of enterprise customers that includes planning, design, implementation, operations, and business administration of their network services. The Newbridge GSMP is a key component in AT&T's bid to lead the managed network services market.

Designed for the global reach and scope of AT&T's managed bandwidth services, Newbridge GSMP integrates the full portfolio of Newbridge networking products under a fully featured service management system.

Including services such as private line, frame relay and ATM, GSMP enables AT&T to offer customers a full, end-to-end view of their global networks. Key parameters include configuration, network status, SLAs and performance reporting — as well as detailed visibility of network bandwidth resources down to the slot, card, or port level. Customers will have "an unprecedented on-line view of these services on a global basis," said Bill Callahan, Services Director, AT&T Managed Network Solutions.

Within the fast growing professional network service provider market, AT&T Solutions is setting the standard for all others to emulate. "By deploying Newbridge equipment and GSMP customized for AT&T, AT&T Managed Bandwidth Services offers the industry's most comprehensive suite of managed, end-to-end, reconfigurable bandwidth services," said Callahan.

The customized solution developed by Newbridge for AT&T includes the following:

Network and Service Management Products

•MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager •MainStreetXpress 45020 Element Manager •MainStreetXpress 48020 Multinetwork Service Controller •MainStreetXpress 56020 Routing Services Control Point •Connect Exec •Customer Service Management

2) Newbridge's switches are cheaper, and they are likely more appropriate for smaller enterprise and provider networks that aren't going to be stressed to the extent that the bigger providers' networks will be. I expect more wins for Newbridge in accounts like Telekom South Afrika where the customer is more price-sensitive and less particular about switch performance.

I don't know anything about prices. I do know I've been through their R&D labs and witnessed the Bell Labs-quality testing their equipment goes through and I know the 36170, for example, qualifies for over 5 9s of reliablility which means it's only down 18 seconds a year. I also know they sell to carriers which have extremely high standards of reliability. If you want to talk about stressed networks, go talk to the AT&T guys who had Cisco's equipment out 3 days, or talk to Ascends's folks who had to take their switches back because they were starting central offices on fire.

3) Newbridge will be stronger in the enterprise market, maybe even stronger than Ascend because their switches are a lot cheaper. But the contracts are much, much smaller.

Please provide URLs for the contracts you're comparing. I'd like to know what you call cheap and see the products compared apples to apples.

4) Enjoy Newbridge's contracts with SBC, C&W, and BT. They are long-time Newbridge customers, but I don't think they will win any more contracts like these. I will be happy for you if Newbridge proves me wrong!

When you say "I don't think they will win any more contracts like these," you lapse into pure speculation and discredit yourself. At the recent AGM, Alan Lutz said NN will announce another major US contract in Q3. Beyond that, I have no idea what contracts are coming down the pike. If you know, please enlighten me.

When you respond, please use the NN thread. I post often so you won't have any trouble getting my attention.

Regards,

Pat
