Another chipmaker in the black. AMD: Q3..

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE:AMD)on Tuesday became the second major chipmaker in as many days to shatter analysts' estimates in its third quarter. AMD posted a profit of $1 million, or 1 cent a share, on sales of $685 million. First Call consensus expected AMD to lose 11 cents a share in the quarter. The surprising results were fueled by a 30 percent improvement in sales versus the second quarter and a 15 percent jump compared to the year-ago quarter when it lost $31.6 million, or 22 cents a share, on sales of $596 million. On Monday, Motorola beat analysts' estimates for the third quarter and said it was on track to meeting fourth quarter earnings estimates as well.
