Hello Michelle,

I thought that the Rutherford story, and Whitehead's attempts to distance himself from the religious right, was interesting in that it paralleled the problem Republicans face in pursuing Clinton on I believe this whole Monica thing. The Starr report and the hearings reinforce everyone's worst suspicions about the GOP: that they are dominated by a bunch of fundamentalists who want to wage cultural war rather than govern. There might be some, or even many, among them who are genuinely concerned about alleged violations of law. Unfortunately for them, most Americans suspect the impeachment process is part of a larger holy war against the social changes of the 60s and 70s. That's why women and minorities, regardless of their personal outrage or nonchalance, haven't generally turned on Clinton politically: despite all his flaws, at least his agenda does not include curbing freedom.
