"Yahoo? That's not leadership."

On Monday's trading, from redherring.com

MARKET UPDATE: NASDAQ
IN THE DOGHOUSE

By Peter D. Henig
Red Herring Online
October 5, 1998

<snip>

"Leadership? There is no leadership," said Rick Berry,
director of research for J.P. Turner & Co. "Yahoo
(YHOO)? That's not leadership."

Indeed, it's not.

Yahoo took a hit with the rest of technology's biggest
names as the FTC announced that longtime market
favorite, Cisco would be investigated for possible illegal
discussions it had held with Lucent (LU) and Nortel
Networks (NT), allegedly discussing splitting up market
share between the three.

Wherever investors looked, the screen printed red.
Amazon (AMZN), America Online (AOL), Dell, Nokia
(NOKA), Sun (SUNW), IBM (IBM), and others all
got torched during Monday's session.

Only one way down

"It's so predictable, this isn't fun anymore," said a dour
Mr. Berry, lamenting that valuations, which still remained
above historical levels, still have plenty of room to fall.

"I think the Dow could see 5,000 next year without any
problem, probably 6,800 by the end of this year," said
the analyst.

<snip>

And what about those precious Internet stocks which
could do no wrong?

"I predict the Internet stocks will lose 50 to 80 percent
of their value over the next 12 months," claimed the
analyst.

That prediction alone should stir up the markets a bit.

Please, don't compare Iomega with Yahoo. Yes there are similarities in the way the stock price has skyrocketed once these companies showed earnings, but IMO, this is a totally different ball game. Don't get me wrong, I think that eventually YHOO's price will correct (and maybe even hard), but the overall outlook (long term) for this stock (and the industry we're talking about here) are spectacular. Of course no one is infallible and Yahoo might fall by the wayside in the future, but I personally think that Yahoo and some of the other big portals (my favorite is Excite) will not only survive, but flourish. Good Luck
