Scumbria,

Re:How long this can last is anybody's guess if the rest of the world flushes itself down the toilet.

Had Intel decided to sacrifice a little market share and keep margins up, everyone would be making more money.

On the contrary, had Intel decided to sacrifice a little market share in hopes of keeping margins up, competitors could gain even more in the future, especially in 1999. Intel would be faced with much smaller volumes as a result, and no amount of high margins would be able to support the bottom line.

Scumbria - Re: "Cyrix would have been perfectly happy to sell
CPU's for $300."

They tried - or don't you know?

When Cyrix came out with their 686 toaster, they tried to sell it at the same price as Intel's Pentium.

Nobody was buying.

Virtually nobody.

Jerry Rogers - Cyrix founder and ex- CEO lost his job over that fiasco.

Cyrix is now a don't care.

They would be happy selling anything at any price.

They have inferior products, inferior product development people and inferior manufacturing.

Not to mention superior losses.
