Stinko Products We Despise

Jesse Berst, Editorial Director
ZDNet AnchorDesk

We're hot-headed at AnchorDesk. When we like something, we reallllly like it. (Try separating Jon from his PalmPilot. Or Annette from her coffee.) And when we don't care for something... well, let's just say we skip right past disapproval and go straight to revulsion.
Over the past few months, we've bumped into some products we just... plain... despise. These feelings don't arise from lab testing or benchmark tests. They come from trying to make products work in the real world. So as you read our opinions, please remember we're making absolutely no effort to be fair, impartial or scientific. Millions of people apparently disagree with us, since several of these products have garnered good reviews and huge sales.

But if you asked us to tell you which three products we secretly can't stand, here's what we'd say.

Hughes DirecDuo. Ever stayed up late Christmas eve to assemble a toy for your kids? Six hours later, you hate that toy.

And we came to hate the Hughes DirecDuo after spending weeks trying to install it. In theory, the product sounds awesome. Install one dish antenna and get satellite TV plus fast Internet access.

We originally tried to get it running at the house of Managing Editor Liz Enbysk. A week later, the Hughes technician had been there so often and so long her kids were calling him "Uncle Oswald." So we sent the DirecDuo to Technical Director Jon DeKeles. He can make anything work, we said. Jon got the DirecTV side up in about 15 minutes. But after fussing with the DirecPC side for days, Jon came to hate it so much he refused to keep trying.
