Rohm Puts Hold On Plans For Advanced Wafer Production

TOKYO (Nikkei)-Rohm Co. (6963) will freeze plans to install production facilities for a next generation of silicon wafers at subsidiary Rohm Apollo Device, company officials said Tuesday.

Rohm, which specializes in system chips and other customized devices, has decided to review its overall capital investment due to falling demand for semiconductors. Many big semiconductor makers have already been forced to postpone or cancel capital investment in DRAMs and other general-purpose chips.

Rohm Apollo Device has almost completed clean room preparations to start producing digital/analog signal processors and flash memories by March 1999.
