China's Networking Products Market Sizzles

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 6, 1998--The networking products market in China this year is sizzling while it surpasses the growth of the country's PC market, a new channel survey and industry report by Advanced Forecasting-Huicong (AFHC) unveiled. Leading the pack are Ethernet cards, already up 67 percent during the first half of the year compared to the same period in 1997.

Hubs, switches and routers are also experiencing enviable growth.

Second in a series of reports from AFHC, this primary research is based on a survey of 1,200 distributors and resellers and approximately 60 vendors with the two samples distributed over 30 cities across the mainland China.

"This is just the beginning of the wildfire," declared Dr. Peng Fu, chief analyst for AFHC. "We expect this market to continue to heat up. Several factors are at play including growth in Internet usage, a more important role emerging by system integrators/distributors and increasingly fierce price competition in the channel."

Dr. Fu predicts, "Overall market size growth will reach well above 60 percent by year's end."

"AFHC's Channel Survey & Industry Report: Networking Products Market in China (First Half 1998)" is one of a series of reports from AFHC. The report, updated twice yearly, includes primary data from the channel on pricing for four networking segments, advertising, and distribution. In addition to historical data, the report includes information on over 30 network distributors and vendors like 3Com, Cisco, and Intel Corporations currently operating in China. It also provides insight on features of the Chinese market and key strategies to penetrate it.

I'm still fairly new to investing(3 years) and even newer to computing(6 months). Current cpq holdings are 300 @ 3l 3/4 and l200 @3l 7/l6. I have been a lurker on this thread since May, having bought my computer and stock both in April. I've found this thread extremely helpful. Never would have found links to afterhours, globex, stocksplits and whispers on my own. Now that I am a little more comfortable with the computer I decided to join SI so I could pick the brains of people who have forgotten more about cpq than I will ever learn. Which brings me to my first question. How reliable iswww.whisper.com? Concensus for Q3 is .06. Their whisper is .03. Could this be why the recent slide has been so severe or will analysts look past Q3 if they miss their number knowing that the Dec acquistion will add to Q4 earnings? Thanks in advance and please feel free to point out any mistakes I make. Computer language and symbols are still pretty foreign to me.
