SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

"Cost-Effective Lithography for MR/GMR Technology"

Hyatt Saint Claire

San Jose, Calif.

Ultratech Stepper, Inc. (Nasdaq NM:UTEK), a leading supplier of
photolithography systems used for the manufacture of semiconductors, thin
film heads (TFHs) for disk drives and micromachining devices, today
announced that it will host its seventh annual seminar on TFH lithography in
conjunction with DISKCON USA '98. This year's conference, "Cost-Effective
Lithography for MR/GMR Technology," is scheduled for Wednesday,
September 23, 1998, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Sainte Claire
in San Jose.

Commenting on the event, Norbert Kappel, Ultratech's TFH senior product
manager, noted, "As the industry transitions to the next generation of TFH
manufacturing, there is a greater need for reliable, highly productive and
cost-effective lithography solutions that enable the manufacture of advanced
devices with increasingly smaller geometries. This seminar is a vital forum
where data storage professionals from around the world come together and
discuss how to optimize their lithography processes to address both current
and future TFH manufacturing challenges."

This year's presentations will include, but are not limited to, the following
topics:

-- Technology and market trends in TFH manufacturing

-- Requirements for rowbar applications

-- Use of steppers in high-volume TFH manufacturing

-- Trends in reticle requirements for the TFH industry

-- Manufacturing challenges in the TFH lithography process

-- Trends in magneto-resistive/giant magneto-resistive head

technology

-- Advances in photoresist technology and applications

-- Improvement in stepper performance through new technologies

Since the seminar's inception in 1991, interest in manufacturing and
business trends for the TFH industry has grown considerably, leading to
steadily increasing attendance each year. In addition to addressing
lithography challenges in TFH manufacturing, the seminar will also review
process results using Ultratech steppers in these environments. This year's
presenters include representatives from Applied Magnetics Corporation, AZ
Electronic Materials (a unit of Clariant Corporation), Peripheral Research,
Photronics and Ultratech Stepper.

OT to David re Canadian Tax Rules.

I've received advice to the contrary from my accountant.
Essentially, the odds of Revenue Canada catching the transaction unless they're auditing you for some other reason is low. So you might be able to process the paper work without any immediate problems. However the tax act and the Interpretation Bulletins would bring in the "wash sale" rules if you are holding "substantially the same security" via options.

You can get the IB from their web site.

By the way, I like your accountant better than mine. ;-)
Is (s)he looking for new clients?

Ian.
