Hi Iceshark, got to confess all I know about Russian realpolitik re: desire to expand south comes from Flashman series, but George McDonald Fraser's footnotes look respectable. According to Fraser, Russians have wanted a Southern port, i.e., Persian gulf, Arabian sea, that doesn't freeze in winter, for centuries, which explained their involvement in Afghanistan in 19th century, and explains it in 20th century. I, personally, would leave Afghanistan and Iran alone.

My take is that Clinton's "Wag the Dog" is Kosovo. Washington Post and Washington Times report today that Russia opposes airstrikes; "at least five NATO countries including Germany and Italy" oppose unless United Nations passes a resolution expressly approving an allied attack; and Defense Secretary Cohen testified before a skeptical Senate committee, that he opposed sending US ground troops into Kosovo: "It is my recommendation, I would almost say insistence, that it [ground troops to enforce peace] would be largely, if not wholly, European in nature." If strikes against Kosovo are not supported by Russia, NATO, or the United Nations and the United States Defense Department opposes US ground involvement, who's left? Clinton. But, as the Commander in Chief, he can do it. Unilateral nature of action won't deter him. Look at almost unilateral brinksmanship versus Iraq, and unilateral strikes against terrorist camps when Monicagate broke out. It is hard for me, a patriotic, conservative American, to trust Clinton's motives in Kosovo.
