OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PRESS DIGEST- New York Times business - Oct. 7

NEW YORK, Oct. 7 (Reuters) - The New York Times reported the following business stories Wednesday:

* For the first time since the AT&T Corp. <T.N> was founded in 1885, the company introduced a brand that does not mention AT&T: the Lucky Dog Phone Co.

* Advanced Micro Devices Inc. <AMD.N> was the second chip company to provide an unanticipated bit of good news about earnings, a possible sign of a rebound in the chip industry. Motorola Inc. <MOT.N> reported better-than-expected earnings Monday.

* Barnes & Noble <BKS.N>, the largest bookstore chain in the United States, and Bertelsmann AG <BTGGga.F> , the German media conglomerate, struck a $200 million deal that poses a powerful threat to the electronic commerce pioneer Amazon.com <AMZN.O>.

* The naming of G. Richard Wagoner Jr. as the president and chief operating officer of the General Motors Corp. <GM.N> shows how the world's largest corporation is changing -- and how it is not.

* In this season of pre-holiday hype, Tiger Electronics Inc. began a campaign to introduce the toy it contends is the next Tickle Me Elmo: a sweet, if slightly scary-looking, little playmate called Furby.

Somehow I doubt even divine intervention will help amazon's stock price. the market has been unrelenting on companies that report even the slightest bad news.

you could say that a 1600 pound B&N/Bertles gorilla just stepped up to the previously alpha-male 800 pound amazon gorilla. This qualifies as very bad news, in my book. :)

in closing, i think i'll re-quote something Amazon supporters used to say: (and highlander duncan mcleod)

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!

(and it starts with a B, any way you slice it) :)

It appears that we have made and tested the bottom for this
decline. We have held the dow at 7500 and the Nasdaq @1500
The news is horrible, the investors have shown panic, the
analysts are over 55% negative. That usually spells bottom.
I think good surprises will start coming and we should see
the beginnings of a good move up tomorrow. So dont be suprised
to see AMZN gap in the morning. But I believe your right
on the longer term, the writing is on the wall...Gil
