IDT's RC4640 RISC Microprocessor Selected for New xDSL Switch and Modem Products From PairGain Technologies; New Switch Design From PairGain Also Utilizes IDT's ATM SAR Controller
Business Wire - October 07, 1998 09:18
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 1998--IDT (Nasdaq:IDTI), a leading manufacturer of RISC microprocessors, today announced that its RC4640 RISController(TM) microprocessor has been selected by PairGain Technologies, Inc. for use in both its new Avidia(TM) System access concentrator and DMT ADSL Megabit Modems(TM).

In addition to the RC4640, PairGain's Avidia System also utilizes IDT's IDT77252 ATM segmentation and reassembly (SAR) controller. The Avidia System provides telecom service providers and private enterprise owners with a new, revolutionary solution for establishing broadband network access for remote users. It is an ATM-based switch that can be configured as a DSLAM, access server or LAN concentrator. It supports the industry's widest range of service options from a single platform, including G.lite, full-rate DMT ADSL, SDSL, T1/E1 and frame relay. PairGain's new DMT ADSL Megabit Modems are designed for installation at the subscriber end of a remote access network. The modems enable users to access central office or LAN networks at speeds ranging from 1.5 Mbps with G.lite up to 7.5 Mbps with full-rate DMT ADSL.

Together, the Avidia System and Megabit Modems offer a complete, end-to-end solution for deploying high-speed remote access networks for Internet access, telecommuting and branch office applications.

"The superior performance and value-added features of IDT's RC4640 processor make it an ideal solution for emerging markets such as ADSL," said Nick Kucharewski, vice president of IDT's microprocessor division. "PairGain is a leader in xDSL and we are pleased to be a key component in the launch of these exciting new products. The selection of our RC4640 processor for both its Avidia System and Megabit Modems is a testament to our price/performance advantages and the extensive support we provide to our customers."

"We selected IDT's RC4640 because of its flexibility, its 64-bit performance at 32-bit prices and the fact that it is a proven mature product," said Ali Safari, product manager of the Avidia System at PairGain. "The IDT processor enables advanced traffic management, system control and access server functions at a relatively low cost. This type of functionality is critical for our telecommunication service provider customers."

"The design tools and support during the design phase provided by IDT assured us that we would have a fully-functional design in a short time with a minimum of rework and debugging," added Hossam Salib, project manager at PairGain.

RC4640 RISController Microprocessor

The RC4640 was selected by PairGain to perform multiple tasks including traffic management, cell processing and real-time Ethernet to ATM conversion. The processor is a 3.3-volt, 200-MHz 64-bit RISC CPU with enhanced DSP capability, which achieves 265-Dhrystone MIPS performance and 100 million multiply/accumulate (MAC) operations per second. The RC4640 combines a true internal 64-bit execution core with a 32-bit bus interface, to help achieve the lowest possible system cost, and supports greater than 400-MBps external bus bandwidth. The use of up to two RC4640 processors per SDSL or ADSL line card provides support for up to 24 channels per card and 432 channels per system.

IDT's World-Class RISC Microprocessor Family

The RC4640 is an important member of IDT's widely used 32/64-bit RISController microprocessor family that implements the MIPS instruction set. Offering a wide range of software-compatible, price/performance choices, IDT has optimized the design of its high-performance microprocessors for use in an assortment of embedded applications, including internetworking, multimedia, data communications and telecommunications products, such as VideoSurfer's TV-TOP(TM) digital set-top box, the WebTV(R) Plus Internet Receiver, EchoStar's digital broadcast satellite receiver, Cisco routers and cable modem home connectivity equipment.

IDT77252 ATM SAR Controller

The IDT77252 ATM SAR controller is a member of IDT's ATM SAR family of controller chips. Providing both AAL SAR processing and ATM layer protocol processing, the controller supports ATM Adaptation Layer types 0, 3/4 and 5, and raw cell formats for constant bit rate (CBR), variable bit rate (VBR) and unassigned bit rate (UBR). One ATM SAR controller per channel card is used to convert frame data from 24 HDSL or 12 ADSL lines to ATM cells for further processing within the Avidia System.
