<<What's a "Faroujda"? Could you elaborate?>> Will tell you what little I know, Glen. NTSC standard TV presently uses 525 lines pf picture information. About 10 years ago a company called Faroujda - named after the founder I believe - started selling digital equipment that simulate ( through extrapolation) doubling and quadrupling that info. Not quite as good as the 1080 real lines of info in HDTV, but much better than present broadcasts. I believe their line doublers sell for $10,000. Quadruplers for $24,000. They are primarily used in expensive...often extraordinarily expensive... home projection theatre systems. The HDTV systems will have 6 times the pixels of present TVs .....but Faroujda did find an ingenious way to get more out of the old system for a long time ( in tech years). Now the company is scrambling a little to face their future ...as is AXC in a different way. I would like to once again ( I'm a big futility fan) make the point that there is a surprisingly large international pool of wealthy people who pony up mammoth sums for what they believe to be excellence in audio and video equipment. Limited numbers of sales , but whopping margins. These markets, while relatively small are quite a bit larger than say present DST or DCR markets. And you don't have to go through a 1 year committee review to sell to them. You sell with excellence and reputation, and the buyers buy rapidly. An elaborate home theatre system can easily surpass $200,000 in cost for instance. A few examples of audiophile prices..... The Nagra-D 4 channel portable digital recorder - $25,750. ( Even with the renewed fervor for analogue nowadays ..there is not a single truly revered, high end analogue deck out there that I know of. That's why the old Ampex decks command such a premium. The field is wide open for a ridiculously - to us- expensive reissue). The JMlab Grande Utopia speakers - $70,000 a pair. Clearaudio Insider phono cartridge - $7,500! ( lol) The Forsell Air Force One Mk.II turntable - $29,000.The Mark Levinson 30.5 Digital Processor ( you'll still need a transport to play the CDs) $15,950. Conrad Johnson ART preamplifier $14,995. Boulder 2050 monoblock amp ( solid state) $59,000 a matched pair. etc etc...you get the idea. For the most these are not pros buying this equipment.Enthusiasts ( or maniacs- arguable) are buying .....and have been for a long time. They seek excellence. The Ampex name is still revered among them...... But there are only used Ampex products to buy.
