Seems to me that even good earnings isn't enough to get buyers to come in any significant amount in this market. Traders will play the earnings pop then bail but I think many investors are trying to gauge what's in store several quarters out. If earnings decline going out, so does the price. Add in tax selling ... .

On the positive side, lots of opportunity to set up a long-term position at excellent prices. Good time to be especially careful, though; IMO.

Let's look at the past three quarters..

12/97 Estimate: 76 cents Actual: 86 cents Diff: 13%
3/98 Estimate: 9 cents Actual: 14 cents Diff: 55%
6/98 Estimate: 27 cents Actual: 32 cents Diff: 19%

I wouldn't call that just squeaking past estimates...

And neither would I although the market didn't take kindly to that last quarter.
