Hello Last Mile Fans. I saw this article tonight and thought of your fine thread. It appears that FON is moving forward to one degree or another with a Fiber solution (Surprise, Surprise). *************************************************************** Thursday October 8, 6:22 pm Eastern Time Company Press Release Sprint Names RELTEC Prime Vendor in Thirty-Month Contract for Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier and Fiber-to-the Curb Deployment CLEVELAND--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 8, 1998--RELTEC Corporation (NYSE:RLT - news) today announced that they have been designated as the ''Prime Vendor'' in a thirty-month contract award for deployment of Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier and Fiber-to-the-Curb (FTTC) products in the Sprint Local Telecommunications Division network. The contract extends RELTEC's major product position with Sprint. RELTEC products covered by the award include its DISC*S(R) Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier (NGDLC) full-service broadband access platform and Fiber-to-the-Curb systems. Other terms of the contract were not disclosed. The DISC*S Fiber-to-the-Curb system is the telecommunications industry's most widely deployed FTTC technology. By year-end 1998, RELTEC expects to have approximately one million lines of FTTC capacity in commercial deployment. A key element of RELTEC Deep Fiber Solutions for service providers is that DISC*S provides integrated voice, video and high-speed data services from a single platform. In addition to fiber distribution applications, the DISC*S platform also offers advanced copper solutions including digital subscriber line (DSL) features that enable high-speed transmission over conventional copper lines as well as conventional narrowband. Dudley P. Sheffler, RELTEC President and Chief Executive Officer, said, ''This important contract award builds on an already strong relationship with Sprint which has been an important part of our success. The extension of our technology into even more advanced access technologies and capabilities will, we believe, strengthen the Sprint local exchange strategy in a broadband world.'' >> SNIP
