They buy puts along with their long positions in order to minimize/quantify their downside. Therefore my suspicion is that no one is getting rich off of the put buying. People who buy/sell puts without underlying securities(or plans to possess them) or the naked call sellers are pure speculators(and gamblers). JMHO.
