Ames Reports September Sales

ROCKY HILL, Conn., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Ames Department Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMES) today announced net sales of $210.3 million for the five weeks ended October 3, 1998, compared with net sales of $193.0 million for the five weeks ended September 27, 1998, an increase of 9.0 percent.

Comparable-store sales for the period were $198.0 million, compared with $185.5 million in the same period last year, an increase of 6.7 percent. Comparable-store sales are based on 286 stores.

Net sales for the 35-week year-to-date period were $1.411 billion, compared with $1.285 billion last year, an increase of 9.8 percent. Comparable-store sales for the year-to-date period were $1.341 billion, compared with $1.245 billion in the year-earlier period, an increase of 7.7 percent.

Joseph R. Ettore, Ames' President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "Girls, Infants, Domestics, Furniture, Appliances and Electronics categories were strong sellers in September, contributing to a solid sales performance for the company. Apparel sales showed improvement late in the month with the onset of cooler weather. Ames opened three new stores in September in Johnstown, Pa., Warren, R.I. and Bangor, Maine, all of which are performing well."

AMES Triples Donation to the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp

ROCKY HILL, Conn., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Ames Department Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMES) will present a check for $71,000 to Connecticut's Hole in the Wall Gang Camp (Ashford, Conn.) today at Ames' Corporate Office. Proceeds for the donation came from Ames' Annual Charity Auction held at a company meeting in September.

Ames' President and Chief Executive Officer, Joseph R. Ettore, will present the check at 2 p.m. to representatives from The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, including Executive Director, Bob Kaufmann, and Camp Director, Jimmy Canton. The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, which was founded ten years ago by actor Paul Newman, is devoted to children with cancer and other serious blood disorders. Last year Ames' Annual Charity Auction raised a total of $23,500 to the camp. This is the third year Ames' Charity Auction has benefited The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp.
