Don't kid yourself. The whole IT universe is waiting for Merced (even Sun Microsystems and Scott McNealy). You are right in that the big quantities of IA-64 servers probably won't ship until McKinley. Intel has already said that its performance would exceed Merced's a lot. However, every server manufacturer will develop systems based on Merced to test compatibility, performance, scalability, etc., etc. of the architecture. These development activities to get ready for the floodgate opener, as you say, McKinley. Hey, it's 64 bit! Those computer development freaks can't wait to get their hands on it!
