In Intel's case, as with most techs, the stock repurchases do not reduce the shares outstanding, but merely prevent the dilution from employee options. In Intel's case, the shares outstanding has remained pretty constant at 1.7 billion shares, declining a little in 97, rising a little this year. The last time that share repurchases had a significant effect on Intel's float was back in 96 when the repurchases reduced the float approximately 100 million shares.
