OT It's just TOO obvious that wealth can be destroyed because it's merely a perception that we all agree on. We all hold hands and agree together. When the big world-wide depression of the 30's came along pretty much EVERYBODY became poor. Perhaps as Jeff explained, the perception of reality suddenly changed (or people "woke up" to a new reality)

Here's a good example: I own shares of United Wealth Creation inc.
and the value goes up for ten years until I'm a millionaire. I go away on a month-long trip; when I come back the shares have plummeted
and I'm broke. What happened?!

It turns out United was in the tulip business in Holland in the 17th cent. (or the South Seas business in 18th cent. England). One day tulips are worth millions, a month later you can't give them away. Or hula-hoops. Or Silver in 1980 (?). The share price frenzy of 1929?
Anybody want some oil at $50 a barrel?

Perceptions CHANGE and wealth is destroyed.

A couple months ago the communists had become capitalists, Asian tigers were the envy of the world, third world was rapidly industrializing and baby-boomers were insatiably throwing all their assets at every mutual fund and broker in sight. SUDDENLY

Perceptions change. Wealth is destroyed. The above examples were only some of the most dramatic examples but it happens on a
smaller scale all the time. The rising tide of wealth which raised ALL boats is now the falling tide and the boats are all looking for a bottom.
