interesting tidbits from the Sony release:

It seems Sony has designed future capacity increses into HiFD. It seems Sony may be able to bump up HiFD's capacity as needed to compete and still maintain backward/forward compatibility.

(concerning the use of its flying read/write head)

...This not only increases media and head life which improves reliability and longevity - it also provides future expandability as the media density is increased.</b.

That is to say...if there is a Zip 200/250MB, then hello HiFD 400MB

It has been reported on this thread that Iomega is actively searching for a additional manufacturing site in San Antonio.

Iomega is proceeding with knowledge of (1) Sony's HiFD drive, (2) expected intermediate term demand based on communications with its major OEM customers, (3) the progress it has and is achieving toward predicted reductions in overhead, (4) its projected unit marginal costs on Zip drives and (5) its need to operate within parameters set forth by its major lenders.

Is this search by those uniquely positioned to know (1) an attempt at corporate suicide or (2) a substantial indication that the turnaround predicted for the fourth quarter is well assured and that the company's prospects are far better than the current share price reflects?
