Right next door to Nicaragua is democratic Costa Rica. It's instructive that the American left didn't hold out for a Costa Rican style government to replace Somoza, but instead enthusiastically supported the Sandanista commandantes with their Castroite regime. This wasn't surprising to anyone who had compared the left's behavior with their rhetoric. There was always an excuse for why a leftist regime shouldn't have elections, freedom to travel, a free press, and so on. It was invariably the fault of the US for supporting the preceding dictator.

My favorite excuses were those made for Pol Pot. Seems that Nixon bombing the North Vietnamese Army in their hideouts in the Cambodian jungle enraged Pol Pot to the point that he just had to murder one third of the population. It couldn't have been his own devotion to an extreme form of leftism that justified killing anyone with the slightest advantage, whether it be an education or whatever.
